01-26-06 –   Developing a Plan for Michigan's Tourism Industry: Progress Report #1 - Don Holecek takes a look a back at how Michigan's tourism industry fared in 2005 and makes a case for why now is an opportune time for the industry to pull together and develop an integrated plan for the future.

12-09-05 –   Michigan Tourism Strategic Plan: A Proposed Project - Don Holecek introduces the concept of a coordinated development plan BY Michigan's tourism industry FOR Michigan's tourism industry. 

10-05-05 –   Collective Wisdom - Don Holecek writes that maybe now is the time to link our individual insights, instincts and problem solving abilities to address the challenges facing Michigan's tourism industry.

07-13-05 –   Confronting Reality – Don Holecek takes a closer look at the state of Michigan's tourism industry and comes to the conclusion, "It is amply evident that all is not well with Michigan's travel and tourism industry.  In the past, when this industry has encountered downturns in business, we could assume that business conditions would improve in a year or two, and all that we needed to do was to 'ride out the storm.'  This time things may be different."

Hopefully, when combined with your own numbers and experiences, you will find additional meanings in and applications for these numbers.

10-27-04 –   Proposal 1 – Where’s the Meat? – Don Holecek reviews Proposal 1, to be listed on Michigan's ballot on November 2, from an economist's perspective. 09-30-04 –   How Are We Doing? Does What We Invest in Promotion Matter? – Don Holecek takes a close look at how Michigan's tourism industry is doing and shares a few relevant findings from recent Travel Industry Association of America publications.  He also discusses whether what we invest in promotion really matters.  This may be his most interesting editorial to-date and is a must-read for anyone running a tourism business or working in the state legislature.

03-31-04 –   Tourism PotpourriDon Holecek writes about a potpourri of tourism-related issues, ranging from the outlook for Michigan tourism in 2004, the impact of rising gasoline prices, the investment generated for the state as a result of Travel Michigan's advertising campaigns, and the re-emergence of Canadian tourists as a target market. 

02-24-04 –   Teaching the Teacher: A Closer Look at Destination MarketingDon Holecek takes a closer look at the marketing of tourism destinations by reviewing a paper written by graduate student, Kudzayi Maumbe.  His editorial examines the evolution of the focus of tourism marketing, the relevance of marketing research, the importance of understanding how tourists make purchase decisions, how to determine an advertising budget, and how to allocate those promotional dollars. 

12-23-03 –   Issues Concerning Racino Development in MichiganDon Holecek writes about the issues concerning "racino" development, which could occur if the Michigan Senate passes a series of bills that would permit video lottery terminals (VLTs) to be installed at the seven horse tracks in southern Michigan. 

11-22-03  A First Look at Prospects for the U.S. Travel Industry in 2004: Highlights from TIA’s annual Travel Marketing Outlook Forum Don Holecek recently returned from TIA's annual Travel Marketing Outlook Forum in Austin, Texas.  Hence, he's chosen to focus this month's editorial on the key issue discussed at that conference: prospects for the U.S. travel industry in 2004.  He reviews attractive market niches, trends, and a forecast for the economy and the U.S. travel industry in the upcoming year.  

10-13-03 –   Where Have All the Big Spenders Gone? – Don Holecek writes about where Michigan's big spending tourists have gone and what might be done to stimulate tourist spending within the state.

08-29-03 –   Agriculture and Tourism—Changing Industries in MichiganDon Holecek writes about the growing interdependency between agriculture and tourism in Michigan, while he questions how we can make them both bigger—together.

02-07-03 –   Michigan’s $3 Billion Travel Trade DeficitMSU researchers estimate that Michigan's economy currently has an annual trade deficit in travel of nearly $3 billion dollars.  This deficit costs the state jobs and results in lost business profits and tax revenues.  It is also definitive evidence of an industry facing major challenges.
